Lady Badgers shine in homecoming

Box Score
EPHRAIM – Playing in their own gym for the first time in almost a month, the Snow College Lady Badgers showed there is no place like home by running over the Mustangs of Western Wyoming on Saturday, 86-56. Eleven different Badgers scored and had at least one rebound each as Snow took a 51-29 halftime lead and then coasted to the 30-point non-conference win.

At the beginning of the week the 16th ranked Badgers were in Washington state where they suffered their first loss after starting the season with 14 wins – a 52-50 defeat at the hands of Centralia College. "It was nice to be back home again," said Snow head coach Natalie Visger. "We were able to get two days of practice in and fine tune before today's game."

Western Wyoming was able to hang with the Badgers, trailing only 12-9 through the first five minutes of the game, but then an 8-0 run put Snow up by double digits and the Badgers extended their lead to as many as 25 before the break. The Badgers' largest lead was 39 midway through the second half.

"It was back and forth at the beginning until we made some defensive adjustments against their dribble drive motion that set the tone the rest of the way," Visger said. "We've refocused since losing against Centralia, and emphasized some details, especially finishing, moving the ball, and executing on offense."

Four different Badgers scored in double figures against Western Wyoming, led by point guard Kaitlyn Hurley who scored all her 13 points in the first half. Jilian Powell and Savannah Park each scored 12 and Ashton Henderson added 11. Hurley grabbed six rebounds and handed out seven assists. Jaden Anderson pulled down seven rebounds to lead the Badgers. Tia Tiller scored 11 to lead Western Wyoming.

As a team Snow grabbed 44 rebounds to 36 for the Mustangs and committed only 11 turnovers while the Mustangs had 24. Snow shot 47 percent from the floor, including five for nine (56 percent) on 3-pointers. The Mustangs hit 41 percent of their field goals and only two of 15 (13 percent) from long range.

"Defensively we needed to get better at protecting the key against dribble penetration, boxing out and boarding, and keeping their players in front of us, but still pressuring them into mistakes," Visger said. "I felt we did a solid job of all of those things this afternoon."

The Badgers (15-1) will be home the next three weekends as they resume play in the Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) this week. They will host Southern Idaho on Thursday followed by North Idaho on Saturday. Snow is atop the SWAC standings at 3-0 while 19th ranked Southern Idaho is 2-1 and 9-4 overall. "Now we have to get ready for three weeks of SWAC conference play at home," Visger said. "It will be nice to be in our own gym for the start of the spring semester and to have our fan support in January."
