Box Score 2 EPHRAIM – The Snow College Lady Badgers were oh-so-close in a pair of home games this past weekend which marked the end of the Scenic West Athletic Conference (SWAC) regular season. The Badgers lost 67-66 on a last second shot by North Idaho on Thursday, and played well, just not well enough to win, as they fell to the College of Southern Idaho Eagles (CSI) by a score of 64-59 on Saturday.
Thursday's game was a back-and-forth affair with each team building double digit leads and came down to a buzzer beating 3-pointer by North Idaho for the win. The Cardinals led 8-5 after the first three minutes, and then surged to a 20-9 lead as they made five straight 3-pointers.
Whitney Saunders and Lisa Van Campen led Snow back, each scoring in double figures before halftime to bring the Badgers back to within two, 33-31, at the break. The Badgers kept the game tight through most of the second half then finally took the lead with under six minutes remaining. They surged to push the lead to 10 with 3:30 left in the game. But the Cardinals outscored the Badgers 16-5 the rest of the way, and were down two when Monica Landdeck launched a game winning 3-pointer as time ran out to give North Idaho the 67-66 win.
Saunders had 15 points to lead Snow, while
Kaitlyn Hurley added 13, Savannah Park scored 10 and Van Campen registered a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Kara Staggs finished with 18 points to lead North Idaho.Â
Again on Saturday the Badgers' guest jumped out to a quick lead early, the CSI Golden Eagles leading 12-2 just three minutes into the game. The Eagles held Snow at arm's length through the first half, forging their biggest lead of the game at 15 points with three minutes to go before halftime. Freshman guard Savannah Park, however, led a 10-2 Snow flurry to close out the half, scoring the last seven points herself, to cut CSI's lead to 41-34 at the break.
The Badgers pulled to within a point midway through the second half, but never could get back to even with the Eagles. Saunders again paced the Badgers, scoring 11 points while Park and Hurley each added 10. Mattie Evenson finished with nine points and a game-high eight rebounds. Samantha Lubcke led CSI in both scoring and rebounds with 14 points and seven boards.
With the regular season now finished, teams head into the SWAC tournament starting on Thursday in Price. As the third seed, 8-7 Snow will open the tournament taking on 0-12 Colorado Northwestern at noon on Thursday. The winner of that game will face the second seed, 10-5 CSI, at noon on Friday. In the other half of the bracket, 8-7 USU-Eastern will play 6-9 North Idaho for the right to face 13-2 Salt Lake on Friday. Friday's winners will face off on at 5:00 p.m. Saturday for the SWAC title, but both teams will receive berths in the national tournament which starts on March 16 in Salina, Kan.
