Snow women beat Colorado Northwestern, lose to CSI in postseason tournament

Box Score EPHRAIM – The Snow women overwhelmed Colorado Northwestern (CNCC) in the opening game of the Scenic West Athletic Conference postseason tournament in Price on Thursday, 82-44. But the Lady Badgers bowed out of the tournament the next day as they lost to the eventual champions from the College of Southern Idaho (CSI), 72-63, ending their season with a record of 21-9.

On Thursday the Badgers parlayed 27 CNCC turnovers into 40 points to run away with the game. Snow opened the game with an 18-0 run in which each of the Badgers' five starters scored. Snow led 37-14 at halftime.

Snow committed only eight turnovers in the game which turned into only three Spartan points. The Badgers scored 28 points in the paint to only eight for CNCC and recorded 23 assists to just nine for the Spartans.

A pair of freshman guards led Snow in scoring, Kaitlyn Hurley with 14 points and Savannah Park with 12. Hurley did most of her damage from long range, going four for five from beyond the arc. Sophomore Jilian Powell scored 10 points for the Badgers, and she and Park each dished out seven assists. Powell and Whitney Saunders each pulled down nine rebounds for Snow. CNCC's Sarah Midgley led all scorers with 15 points.

The next day Snow started slowly – something that plagued them often this season – with CSI starting on a 7-0 run. Snow came right back to tie the game at seven, but CSI then went on a 17-0 run to take a 24-7 lead midway through the first period.

The Badgers closed the Golden Eagle lead to 10 at the half, 36-26, then got to within two, 38-36, early in the second period. Snow kept within five points through most of the half, however never pulling even. But with less than three minutes remaining CSI pushed the lead to eight, the most it had been since halftime, and Snow didn't have the steam left to mount another comeback, losing by nine points, 72-63.

Saunders led Snow with 14 points and six rebounds. Hurley finished with 13 points and six boards, and Lisa Van Campen was a third Badger with six boards to go along with her seven points. CSI's Holly Blades scored a game-high 18 points.

CSI went on the defeat Salt Lake Community College, 60-57, on Saturday to win the Region 18 championship and a berth in the NJCAA national tournament in two weeks. Snow's Kaitlyn Hurley was named to the All Region First Team, Whitney Saunders was named to the Second Team as well as the All-Tournament team, and Savannah Park was named to the Region Honorable Mention team.

Snow opened the season with 14 straight wins and was ranked as high as 12th nationally.
