Women's Basketball Kicks Off Home Stretch Against Coyotes

GAME NOTES:

  • The Snow College women's basketball team will return home for a stretch of four consecutive home games as it takes on the College of Southern Nevada Thursday and Community Christian College Saturday in Ephraim.

  • The Badgers enter the homestand following the beginning to Scenic West Athletic Conference play in which they earned a 78-70 victory against North Idaho College followed by a 91-49 defeat against the College of Southern Idaho last week.

  • The Badgers enter play Thursday with an 11-7 overall record on the season and a 1-1 mark within SWAC play.  Thursday's matchup with the Coyotes will serve as just the fourth home game the Badgers have had all season and their first since Dec. 13.  The Badgers are 2-1 in home games this season.

  • Madison Hosino scored a career-high 21 points on 6-12 shooting from the field in the Badgers' eight-point victory against NIC.  Hosino has scored in double figures in 10 of the Badgers' 18 games this season and is second on the team in scoring averaging 11.1 points per game.

  • The Badgers overcame a 13-point deficit against the Cardinals to earn the victory.  This is the largest deficit the Badgers have overcome in a victory since they erased a 15-point lead in a 65-60 victory against CSN last season in Las Vegas.

  • As a team, CSN is second in the nation in scoring averaging 95.2 points per game.  They are also only allowing opposing teams to score an average of 48.2 points per game, which is good enough for sixth in the nation.

  • The Badgers are 7-2 against the Coyotes historically.  Snow College won the first two meetings against CSN last season in Las Vegas before dropping the third game of the season series.

  • Community Christian College has started the season with an 0-9 overall record and an 0-2 record within the SWAC. The Badgers have never lost against the Saints having won all six games historically.  The Badgers won all three matchups against CCC last season by an average margin of 33.3 points per game.

LAST TIME OUT: The Snow College women's basketball team defeated North Idaho College 78-70 Wednesday to begin Scenic West Athletic Conference play.  With the victory, the Badgers improve to 11-6 overall to begin the season.

Snow College entered the weekend following a trio of losses at the Lady Jets Holiday Classic in Americus, Georgia to close out the calendar year.  This was the first time all season the Badgers lost consecutive games.

The Badgers got out to a slow start in the first quarter scoring just eight points.  The Cardinals led by as many as eight during the opening period and took a six-point lead into the second quarter.

The Cardinals continued to extend the advantage throughout the first five minutes of the second quarter.  NIC led 23-10 before the Badgers went on a 14-5 extended run to crawl within one.  They would eventually go into the halftime break trailing 35-33.

The Badgers erased the deficit quickly to begin the second half.  It was a quick 6-0 burst from Snow College that gave it a four-point lead.  The Cardinals fought back, and the score bounced back and forth for the remainder of the third period. The game was tied at 53 headed into the final stanza.

Snow College opened up the fourth quarter on a 9-2 run to take a seven-point lead and would never look back.  The Badgers would lead by as many as nine points and ended up claiming the 78-70 victory.

Three Badgers scored in double figures led by Madison Hosino who led all scorers with 21 points.  Emily Evans recorded her second double-double of the season scoring 19 points and grabbing 10 boards.  Enid Vaifanua added 13 points to aid in the victory.

Following the win, the Badgers suffered a 91-49 loss against the No. 17 College of Southern Idaho Saturday in Twin Falls.  The Badgers will now return home to play just their fourth home game of the season.

The Badgers shot just 29 percent from the field while going 1-14 from beyond the arc throughout the game. Snow College scored just 18 first-half points and would go on to suffer the 91-49 defeat.

Brooke Pennington led the Badgers in scoring with nine points.  Emily Evans added eight points while Ainsley Thurber finished with six points in the loss.

UP NEXT: The Badgers will continue their four-game home stand against Utah State University Eastern Saturday, Jan. 27.  Snow College was originally scheduled to play Colorado Northwestern Community College Thursday, Jan. 25, but the Spartans canceled their women's basketball season.  The Eagles are ranked 16th in the most recent NJCAA Division I Women's Basketball Poll and own a 15-1 overall record and a 3-0 mark in the SWAC.  For video streaming and live stat information, visit snowbadgers.com.
