GAME NOTES: The Snow College women's basketball team will take on Central Wyoming College in a pair of games starting Wednesday in Riverton. The two teams will turn around and face each other Friday as part of the Eagle Classic in Price.
The Badgers enter the matchups following two victories at the Western Wyoming Classic where they defeated the host school 79-71 before earning a 77-54 victory against Northeastern Junior College. Snow College improved to a perfect 4-0 on the young season.
Maliyah Elliott shined in the Badgers' victory against the Mustangs last Friday. She scored a career-high 22 points and tallied six rebounds and three steals to help the team secure the 8-point victory. Elliott leads the team in scoring with 16.8 points per game. She has scored in double figures in all four games this season including 15 or more in the last three.
As a team, the Badgers are shooting 40 percent from beyond the arc through the first four games of the season. They have made at least eight 3-pointers in three of their first four games including going 10-22 in their victory against NJC. The 40 percent shooting from deep ranks ninth in the NJCAA this season.
The Badgers also rank among the top teams in the nation in field goal percentage. Snow College, as a team, is shooting 47.6 percent from the field through the first four games of the year, which slots them 15
th overall in the country.
The 4-0 start to the season is the best record through four games for the Badgers since the 2018-19 regular season. Snow College started last year with a 12-3 record halfway through the season.
CWC owns a 2-3 overall record to start the year but has won back-to-back games after losing each of their first three. The Rustlers earned an 81-73 victory against Treasure Valley before securing a 70-58 win against Dawson Community College Monday.
The Rustlers are scoring an average of 61.0 points per game through the first two weeks of the season. Their struggles have come mostly on the defensive end as they surrender 77.6 points per game to opponents.
HISTORY WITH CENTRAL WYOMING: The Badgers have won all nine games they have played against the Rustlers historically. This week's meetings will be the first time these two teams have met since the 2022-23 season.
Snow College won the most recent meeting with the Rustlers with a final score of 101-40 Nov. 4, 2022. The Badgers are averaging over 70 points per game historically against the Rustlers. Snow College has won all three meetings against CWC in Riverton.
LAST TIME OUT: The Snow College women's basketball team secured a pair of victories at the Western Wyoming Classic over the weekend. The Badgers defeated the Mustangs 79-71 before wrapping up the tournament with a 77-54 win against Northeastern Junior College.
The Badgers were outscored 34-28 in the first half against the Mustangs. The Badgers rallied and put up 51 second-half points and outscored WWCC by 14 to secure the 8-point victory.
Maliyah Elliott led the way with 22 points and six rebounds for the Badgers.
Snow College controlled the entire game against the Plainsmen. They held a 31-23 advantage at halftime before exploding for 29 points in the third quarter and winning the game 77-54. Pennington led all scorers with 17 points and also grabbed nine rebounds to aid in the victory.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Brooke Pennington of the Snow College women's basketball team has been named the Scenic West Athletic Conference Player of the Week, the conference announced Tuesday. The award comes after Pennington helped lead the Badgers to a pair of victories at the Western Wyoming Classic in Rock Springs.
Pennington, a sophomore from Springville, Utah, scored 13 points on 4-9 shooting and grabbed four rebounds in the Badgers' 79-71 victory against Western Wyoming Community College Friday. She followed that up with 17 points, nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals in a 77-54 victory against Northeastern Junior College Saturday.
Through the first four games of the season, Pennington is second on the team in scoring with 14.3 points per game. She is also averaging 5.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. Pennington is shooing 48 percent from the field and 47 percent from beyond the arc this season.
In her two seasons in a Snow College uniform, Pennington has averaged 8.7 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. She has scored in double figures in 13 career games including all four games to start the 2024-25.
Pennington will look to help the Badgers keep their winning streak alive as Snow College has a pair of games against Central Wyoming College beginning Wednesday in Riverton, Wyoming. The two teams will play again Friday in Price, Utah as part of the Eagle Classic.
