Badgers Take 4th Place at Nationals, Finish With Nine All-Americans

The Snow College women's wrestling team finished in fourth place at the NJCAA National Tournament last weekend. It's the highest finish for the team in its brief three-year history. Nine Badgers were named All-Americans following the tournament.

In total, the Badgers had two second-place finishers, one third-place finisher, two fourth-place finishers, one fifth-place finisher, and three sixth-place finishers. Nine All-Americans are the most the Badgers have ever had at the national tournament.

Rachel Jones and Isabella Morgan were the two Badgers who finished in second place for the team. Morgan, who entered the tournament as the two seed, cruised through the first three rounds. She won all three matchups via technical superiority without surrendering a single point.

Morgan found similar success in the semifinal matchup as she defeated Taya Hunt of Carl Albert State via fall to enter the championship bout. She was pitted against four-seeded Delise Villa of Iowa Central Community College and ultimately suffered a 7-4 loss to finish in second place.

Jones, a five seed in the tournament, followed a similar path, winning her first match via technical superiority and her second via fall. She earned a 10-9 victory against four-seeded Brooklyn Noel of Southeast Community College and was then pitted against top-seeded Molly Sek of Iowa Western Community College.

Jones defeated Sek convincingly via fall in just over four minutes to reach the championship. Jones took on Ariah Mervilus of Indian Hills Community College where she was pinned to finish in second place for the Badgers.

Arianah Cowgur won three of her first four matches which placed her in the third-place bout. She took on Makenna Fellers of Hawkeye Community College and earned an 11-0 victory via technical superiority to finish in third place.

Isabelle Messerly and Jennifer Thomas both finished in fourth place. Messerly won her opening matchup via fall but suffered a 12-2 defeat against Julia Chambers of IWCC. She recovered and won each of her next three matchups. She was defeated by Ruth Jimenez of IHCC to finish fourth.

Thomas followed the same path as Messerly, winning 15-5 in her first matchup before being knocked to the consolation bracket. She proceeded to win her next three bouts, including one against teammate Kinley Brandley, before suffering a loss against Alycia Perez of IHCC to finish in fourth place.

Lily Polvado was the lone Badger to finish fifth after she won three of her first four matchups. She suffered a loss in the consolation brackets before earning a convincing 10-0 victory against Taya Hunt of Carl Albert State to finish fifth.

Emily Pasillas, Brandley, and Valentina Martinez all finished in sixth place for the Badgers. Pasillas fought her way back through the consolation bracket after dropping her opening bout. Consecutive narrow losses placed her sixth in the 131-pound division.

Brandley won two matches in the 103-pound weight class before her loss against Thomas. She suffered a 4-2 loss against Myah Rausch of ICCC to claim sixth place.

Valentina Martinez won each of her first two matches, one a 26-15 affair against Laila Mirza of Carl Albert State. After dropping to the consolation bracket, she won two more matches before ultimately finishing in sixth place.

In total, the Badgers recorded 173 points – nearly 50 points more than last season. As a team, they finished in fourth place, two spots higher than their sixth-place finish a season ago. Additionally, The Badgers were also given the team sportsmanship award.

Snow College finished the regular season with a 12-7 overall record. They will begin their fourth season with a full schedule next fall.
